Hmmm Tamalaes

Jenny hosted this January WAC, where we made (as the title describes) Tamales! This is such a fun activity for a group to complete...you have lots of time to talk as you mix the ingredients and wrap your little packages of deliciousness.  Here is a recipe for a traditional tamale and also a vegetarian version. Take a look at the rest of our pictures (which includes the specific ingredient brands we used).

Twilightathon

This month's WAC was hosted by Thaveshni. Twilight fans and newbies alike enjoyed the Twilightathon which featured the movies, "Twilight," "New Moon," and "Eclipse." Some guests enjoyed debating the merits of being "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob." Guests enjoyed delicious snacks, butternsquash pasta with Panko bread crumbs for lunch, vegan cookie bars for dessert, and vegetarian chili at this WACy event. The food was yum-o!

Potato, Potahto

Do you remember (way back in the day) carving potatoes into stamps? The beauty of this craft project is the easy clean up, it is biodegradable, and let us not over look the nostalgic aspect. Nichole provided a set of linoleum cutting tools from a school supply store for the group to use. Some stamp examples were offered (check out this cute idea) and an introduction of carving was given, then the WAC attendees were left to their own creativity. The stamps were used to decorate greeting cards & envelopes, which were divided up between the members for them to take home. Take a look at the rest of potato stamping pictures here.

Deceptively Delicious!

Melissa was the September WAC host. She showed the guests how to make delicious frozen treats. Guests enjoyed soup, salad, and bread for dinner. Melissa demonstrated how to incorporate vegetables into fruit based frozen blended treats. Even guests that were veggie-shy agreed that these frozen treats were delish! The WACy women experimented by blending different combinations of cabbage, strawberries, bananas, raspberries, blackberries, coconut flakes, walnuts, peanut butter, cocoa powder, ice cubes, wheatgrass, and ground flax. Melissa's high speed Vitamix blender blended up the veggies so well that they seemed to disappear! For the anti-veggie folks, these treats were deceptively delicious! For more photos, click here.

Raw "Cooking"

The WAC had a special guest this month. Kristi, Kari's sister, showed the WACy gals had to make  healthy raw tostadas. All ingredients were vegan and mostly organic. Melissa brought her new Vitamix blender and the women literally whipped up some food! "Taco meat" was made with ground walnuts. Toppings included "sour cream" (cashews blended with water, salt, and lemon), lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole. The crisp corn tortilla was pre-made by Kristi in her dehydrator. Guests also enjoyed carrots with raw/vegan ranch dressing, lemonade sweetened with agave nectar, coconut water, and a raw/vegan berry pie. Click here for the recipes Kristi used and click here for more photos.

Dancing on the Square

July called for some spice...Jenny hosted this month's WAC in downtown Redwood City!
The city sponsored dancing lessons one night each week during the summer. Everyone learned a few Salsa steps...then we practiced our moves on the fellas.
At the end of the lesson, professional dancers took the floor to WOW the crowd. Take a look at all of the pictures here.

Jam Session

Allison was this month's WACO.  We learned how to make and preserve jam!!!

All of the supplies were found at our local OSH. Here's a link to the jam making technique.

Some of today's WAC participants used agave nectar instead of sugar - this makes the jam a yummy low-carb treat.
